Pointers to Presence

And what is mind And how is it recognized? If I clearly draw In sumi ink, the sound Of breezes drifting through pine Is all that is seen.

As Grace offers glimpses of limitless Awareness to more and more seekers, and the Satsang experience nurtures an awareness of the presence / consciousness behind the thinking/believing mind, many are called to discover the answer to the only real question of Life:

Who or What am I?

Many experience connection with Self in the form of often intense and beautiful epiphanies of all kinds – shaktipats, satories, and samadhis – during retreats, intensives and satsangs, only to discover that the sense of oneness dissipates into the background as the duties of life return.

Because experiences, spiritual and otherwise, always come and go, many yearn for a road map and a driver's manual that will help them navigate to the goal: a clear mind that reflects the wisdom of the Self and a pure heart through which its nondual love can flow.

For thousands of years, no method has awakened more seekers and carefully sheparded them through the long and sometimes difficult housecleaning process that leads to the resolution of this fundamental doubt than Vedanta, the teaching tradition sourced in the Upanishadic texts of ancient India.

Unfortunately, these teachings have been largely inaccessible to Westerners for various reasons:  an intimidating Sanskrit alphabet, arcane mythological symbols, and  enthusiastic but incorrect translations and interpretations by intellectuals and misguided yogis.

James Swartz, a disciple of Swami Chinmayanada, one of India's foremost Vedanta masters in the last half of the last century, has dedicated himself to the painstaking task of rendering many of these ancient texts in clear modern English without compromising their profound meaning.

In this spirit, Atma Vicara will produce video tutorials and published versions of each of his translations and articles in order to provide modern Western seekers with the maps and manuals that, since time immemorial, have been of immeasurable assistance in the discovery of Truth and the work that follows.
