My experience, my practice, on the path was simply to rest as awareness as often as possible, throughout the day.  I didn't call it awareness back then.  I called it presence.  There is no name for it.  In fact, don't get hung up on these labels.  It is the felt sense of openness that is available to you at all times.  Stop thinking for one moment and that openness is available.  Notice that the openness is always there, even when thoughts and emotions are arising.

(This is another excerpt from my upcoming book, which is like a user-friendly userguide to the direct path.)

Last time, in "Does Awareness Have an Inner Structure?"  we took a quick look at the "grid" notion of a structure that some have proposed that awareness has. We also saw that in direct experience, there is no structure. But these notions come up frequently, and sometimes even nondual teachings imply that awareness has a structure. So let's look at this in more detail.

If Truth is true, it would stand to reason that it would be found in all traditions--Eastern and Western. Intelligence would bring us to the same conclusion irrespective of the path. The absolute, by definition, would have to ultimately reveal itself whenever it was single mindedly demanded to be known. For Truth to exist, there could be an infinite amount of paths, but, in the end, there would be only one destination.

Does this conclusion hold up when we inspect Western Philosophy?

The question about an inner structure of awareness is something that occasionally comes up for people doing self-inquiry.  People think things are really happening, and they want to know why.  They hear that consciousness is the sum and substance of everything, so they think "Aha!  What is making consciousness do all that?!  What's happening on the inside?"

Scott Kiloby on Relationships

Scott Kiloby recently wrote a very interesting exercise to investigate our sense of separation and relationships with apparent others. Here is his captivating analysis:

I’ve been looking into more innovative ways of helping people see through separation. I’ve since developed something I call the Boomerang Inquiry, which works with respect to relationships (i.e., seeing through the sense of separation in relationships).

X. My life feels meaningless, repetitious and full of conflict, even after all the years of spiritual search. 

Y. Perhaps it’s because of the years of spiritual search.

X. What do you mean? 

One thing we all appear to do is talk. 

When talking, exactly to who/what is the talk directed--since there are not-two?

This confusion about what is meant by enlightenment and other basic definitional issues regarding nondual teaching is the purpose of our new 4 DVD set.

In October of 2009, StillnessSpeaks.com travelled to San Rafael, California, to introduce 15 Western masters and teachers of nonduality to our audience.

We prepared a list of questions for each of them to answer. The same material was covered by each teacher. In this way, we hoped to share each teacher's perspective on these important subjects.

This process raised as many questions as it answered. One thing is for certain, there is profound disagreement amongst teachers.

In this series, the fundamental question of each teacher's view on whether there is "enlightenment" and, if so, what they mean when referring to it, is specificlly explored.

A clergyman in a cathedral, in 1543 Copernicus published a treatise postulating that the sun does not appear to rise and set as a consequence of it revolving around the earth (the latter of which the Church presumed to be the center of the universe); to the contrary, he asserted, the earth revolves around the sun, which is stationary, and it is the earth’s axial rotation which provides the appearance of a rising and setting sun.

Nearly ninety years passed before Galileo’s interest in physics and telescopes resulted in publication (in 1632) of experimental verification of Copernicus’ revelation (followed by Galileo’s trial before Rome’s inquisition the following year).

Like the pre-Copernicans who were without doubt that the earth graced the hub of the universe, most people today still suppose that “cause and effect” is such a truism that it is a physical fact.

This was disproved, now more than 40 years ago!

Our world, of reality, appears to be an organism which symbiotically integrates myriad disparate, yet quintessential, parts.

We each normally think of ourself as one of these inter-dependent parts, somewhat like an atom in a cosmos that we liken to a vast molecule.

Viewing ourself to be a “part” of the cosmos, we are ineluctably condemned to be “apart” from the very cosmos that we determine that we are “in”, in the same way that we consider an electron to be “apart” from the atom that it is “in”.

We hold the idea that while the cosmos is entirely necessary for the presence of my particular being, my particular being is not entirely necessary for the presence of the cosmos.

In other words: we hold the idea that the cosmos is limitless, I am not.

Or, put another way, we have the deep feeling that the cosmos is one thing, I am something else.

Our everyday idea, which usually follows us in an unexamined way into nondual inquiry, is that knowledge, perception and awareness have an inside and an outside.  This means that they are limited, and that some objects reside inside these limits and other objects reside outside these limits.  So “internal” means “internal to our awareness.”  “External” means “External to our awareness.”  There are two reasons that the internal/external distinction doesn’t make sense when it comes to awareness.

Carl Gustav Jung was a great Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist. He was a major figure in modern Western thought; his work continues to spark controversy. He played a fundamental role in the development of psychotherapy and a large international group practices under his name.

As importantly, he is recognized for his prominent role in introducing Eastern thought, as with his commentaries on the I Ching, The Tibetan Book of the Dead and The Secret of the Golden Flower, to name a few.

But, to this author, none of this analysis holds a candle to the recent release of his  journal, The Red Book: Liber Novus. The Red Book combines both art and intimate descriptions of his personal spiritual journey.

So, what is this doing in an exploration of nonduality and advaita? If your self inquiry, in transparency, has never encountered autonomous archetypes, then, perhaps, nothing. Simply skip this entry.

But, if you have had such encounters or are simply curious about what this great man's deep inquiry yielded in wisdom, I encourage you to read just a single note taken from the Red Book: his inscription on the reverse of one of his paintings, Untitled work, 1917, referring to The Cabiri.

What later became known as gnosis would have been known in Buddha’s times as jnana (ya-na); both mean “knowledge,” in the sense of “wisdom,” and are evidently related words from the same root.

The meaning of jnana, summarized in an encyclopedia, is the “eradication of the ignorance that sees the illusory multiplicity of the world as real, by attainment of knowledge of the Self [Absolute],” which is regarded as “a single fundamental reality,” by the presence of which “there is no real distinction between the soul [or self] and God.” …

The word “I”,
Like the word “sky”.
Points to something which
Cannot be seen as an “object” in itself.

Becoming a “pro”
In matters of The Heart,

Receiving the emanation of Anandam from the "apparent" guru requires only relaxed alertness and welcoming.

There is only Endless Enlightening.
Only a fool plants a flag,
And declares the summit.

Perfection lays
Where perfect and imperfect
Do not exist.

I am not that which is alive,
But Life Itself.

And yet…

Why?

If Love will not save me,
Love alone,
Then I am lost, forever.

It brings you always…
Back to Me.

You are everywhere here, like a Dream within a Dream.
My feet walk upon You, my eyes are filled with You, I breath You.

There is no place within or without where You are not.

I've experienced the vanishing of space, time,
And all objects, including...

And found that even without being alive...

Here, in this Locus of Form, two hearts. One the drummer I've known since birth, the other, a fountainhead of Sublimity.

What is, simply is,
And “I” am nowhere to be found.

Ecstasy.

“Perfected”… or “imperfect”,
“Enlightened”… or “ignorant”.
”Doing thus”… or not ”doing thus”,
Hold fast to the Truth…

Must one "become" this or that,
And only then be Free?

Heartbreaking...
This perfecting of the "little self".

If the baby kicks...

“The clay cup that you are now is a beautiful cup,"
said my Buddhist friend.
"But it must be broken, over and over,
Until it becomes Vajra Gold.”

"How very sad," I thought.

I will take the cessation of grasping
Over all the Bliss in the world.
The good news is –
When grasping ceases...
Bliss arises effortlessly.

"Thou art That"
Is merely a useful pedagogical partiality,
Not to be mistaken for the "Truth".

What is it, not to be alive,
But to Be Life Itself?

What if being “unenlightened”
Was a terrible problem…

There is no “getting used to”
This Bliss,
This unlocatability,
This sublimity.

Love beyond form,
In form.
Love beyond time,
In time.

Thomas Merton was a modern Catholic mystic. These are not contradictory terms, although some forms of modern Christianity might have us believe so.

For him, religion was not an endless source of joy and contemplation. He struggled with Faith's calling.

In his widely read biography, The Seven Storey Mountain, Merton explained that he was so drawn to God that he could no more deny it's pull any more than he could deny his identity. His greatest wisdom was the discovery that they were one and the same.

Alexander Smit was a Dutch student of Nisargadatta, who taught advaita for 20 years and died in 1988. He was a contemporary and friend of Wolter Keers, frequently mentioned here. A close friend, John Tuinman offers his recollections of a meeting with Alexander Smit:

A  memory comes to mind of the first day I met Alexander in 1988. I walked into the room where he was sitting relaxed in a chair with one of his hands leaning on the chair arm. I thought, "He seems very relaxed." It was something about that hand that touched me. I sat dawn and he looked around the room to see if anybody was new.

He saw me and asked: "Why have you come?"

I  blurted out: "Self-realization!" because I had been searching for years, yearning like a hungry dog for that divine bone called Self Realization.

Then Alexander asked me: "What do you mean by the 'Self' and what do you mean by  'Realization'?"

The effect of those questions nailed me to my seat.

The Myth of communication.

Franklin Merrell-Wolff called it The Induction; Francis Lucille refers to it as the Power of Transmission. Ramana Maharshi pointed to the Transmission of Silence as the teacher.

What did they all mean?

Bagavan Ramana Maharshi was once quoted as saying: 

"The influence of the Jnani  (Self-Realized one) steals into the devotee in silence. Contact with great men, exalted souls, is one efficacious means of realizing one’s true being.”

Ramana added: “Contact with them is good. They will work through silence. By speaking, their power is reduced. Silence is most powerful. Speech is always less powerful than silence. So mental contact is the best.”

Do we ask questions and receive answers? Do thoughts ever communicate?

Frequently, there are arguements between those who prefer using the mind or the heart to discover Reality. No one has ever better expressed the Truth of this matter than Anandamayi Ma:

"Either melt by devotion the sense of separateness, or burn it by knowledge—for what is it that melts or burns?

Only that which by its nature can be melted or burnt; namely the idea that something other than your Self exists. What will happen then? You come to know your Self."

Born in the small village of Kheora in Bengal in 1896, Nirmala Sundari Devi exhibited remarkable qualities as a very young child, learning the entire Bengali vowels and consenants in one day, entering trances during discourses and chanting, and, later deep samadhis. She married young and, remarkably her given husband bacame a follower early on.

The Six Enneads by Plotinus

The East was not unique in offering clear direction uncovering the ultimate reality. In fact, there are many Western mystics or "philosophers" who exposed the light of our true nature through deep introspection.

 Perhaps you have heard this great quote:

 ""There, our Self-seeing is a communion with the Self, restored to purity. No doubt we should not speak of "seeing," but, instead of [speaking of] "seen" and "seer," speak boldly of a simple unity. For in this seeing we neither see, nor distinguish, nor are there, two. The man is changed, no longer himself nor belonging to himself; he is merged with the Supreme, sunken into It, one with It; it is only in separation that duality exists. This is why the vision baffles telling; for how could a man bring back tidings of the Supreme as something separate from himself when he has seen It as one with himself?"--- Plotinus: Enneds,9: 6:10

There appears to be an infinite number of paths leading to the understanding of the Ultimate. This may be because, unlike absolute Truth, which can never change, ignorance unfolds in an infinite amount of ways, each uniquely suited to the individual "person" one believes to be.

Far be it for us to characterize one as necessarily more effective than another.

Having said this, it seems clear that, in order to truly recognize nonduality, the reality of our existence experientially, at some point, a deep and serious investigation into the key data of mentation is necessary: bodily sensation, sensory perception, feelings and thoughts.

Thus begins an investigation that starts with mentation (perceptions or arsiings) and, ultimately leads to a closer look at what we call time and space.

Why Investigate Traditional Vedanta?

Many are confused and intimidated by Vedanta. There appear to be an overwhelming array of sacred texts, Godheads and unfamiliar Sanskrit terms and no one to simply lead Western seekers through this dense forest to clarity in terms and examples familiar to them.

During the Spring of 2009,  while visiting our home in California, James Swartz was inspired to compile a resource on Vedanta that would be the end all experience for Westerners seeking clarity on Vedanta. It's a secret not because there's anyone hiding anything. It's been proclaimed by sages around the world for millennia. Rather, it's a secret because enlightenment is often misunderstood to be a matter of personal achievement, like scoring the ultimate goal. But there's no person there! There's not even a "there" or a spatial location where a person can reside. There is no individualized or separate "you" or "me"; no goal, no task and no achievement. There are no things, and no gaps separating things.

If this is true, is it not also true that this belief in embodiment, the "cartesian" model, the idea that what we are is contained sets the stage for suffering? The feeling of lack, of limitation is the core motivator of all seeking human behavior. if it weren't for lack, there would be no need to locate something outside of ourselves to make us feel complete. In fact, how could there be lack at all unless there were two things? Without multiplicity, how could there be this feeling of incompleteness? Negative emotions find their source here.

What is Truth?

Exploring the Gospel of Thomas

Exactly, what do we mean when we say that something is true? If something is true, it would have to be absolute, wouldn’t it? What would truth be other than that which never changes? If it changes, could it be Truth?

This being the case, no matter which spiritual path or tradition is followed, it stands to reason that, eventually, that which is discovered should be the same.

And we find that this is true when we investigate all of the great traditions—Hinduism, Sufism, Buddhism, Christianity ,Judiasm, even Science (a religion in itself!). All reach exactly the same non dual certainties.

Today, we investigate The Christ, and the amazing discovery of The Gospel of Thomas. No doubt this Gnostic Gospels are quite divergent from the Gospel of John, as an example. If they had been placed in the Modern Bible, Christ’s teachings would have been clearer and more focused on the non duality, the oneness, of “the human family and God.”

The Illusion of The Continuity of the Body

Some express anger and resistance when we begin to explore the reality of our true experience of the body and world. It seems that this fundamental deconstruction threatens our desire to “change the world” as opposed to changing our beliefs about it.

No where is this more obvious than with respect to out experience of the body as being localized and continuous.

These explorations must be deep, thorough and gentle to yield the fruit of the secrets held in our sensory perceptions and bodily sensations.

It is here that the experiential prize of advaita is hidden: behind the ignorance of the body.

Are you Contained?  Dismantling The Myth of Boundaries, Containers and Limitation

 Recently, our friend Greg Goode (Click here to read about Greg Goode) gave a presentation at The Science and Non-Duality Conference in San Rafael. Greg is the author of "Standing as Awareness", a book we highly recommend (available by clicking here) and the creator of the rich-in-content website, www.heartofnow.com.

In Greg Goode's dialogue on the belief in separation, he discusses one of the fundamental "stumbling blocks" to unveiling the direct experience of our non-dual nature; it is our deeply held belief that we are localized.

If, while considering the origination of the universe, we trace back in our imagination to the very beginning, we must conclude that something had to exist from which everything came forth. But, what exactly, would that have been?

A careful examination of this inquiry clearly reveals the true Nature of Things, but,. it is a process that must be gently and thoroughly considered. This is a tricky but rewarding experiment.

For anything to change...ever, there must be something which remains unchanged. Stop and consider this.

Francis Lucille wrote recently that we carefully ponder both this initial question and the pointers he offers in his recent dialogue regarding the origin of the Universe thoroughly.

The Present is Never a Problem

We are hardwired for happiness.

It's absence is the driver of all action. The search for happiness can not occur without unhappiness, or suffering. It is this desire to complete ourselves, to make ourselves whole and complete, this notion that we are incomplete as we are, that motivates us to "do." 

Everyone familiar with Self Inquiry is familiar with thought watching, the process of witnessing the thoughts as they arise within us. Allot of the time, we end up doing allot of thinking about thinking...which is nothing but yet another thought.

  John Levy was born of  a rich, aristocratic Jewish family in London. An expert in Indian folk music, he was an accomplished musician. He spent much of his adult life in India, where he met the venerable Atmananda Krishna Menon, and was taught by him to give instruction. Pop! Goes the Weasel!

 Truth lovers eventually discover that the only thing they ever experience is the Present Moment, Now, and that Consciousness is Outside of Time and Space. Rarely, do we hear a discussion as to what this actually means as the Truth of Our Experience.

 In the present moment, all we ever experience is the perception of gross and subtle objects, never the object in itself. One way of putting this is that we only ever experience thought, perceptions, mentations, or as is popular to say these days, arisings.

But, what does this say about what we actually experience? Do we ever experience more than one thought, mentation or arising at a time? Does one arising exist within another? Are they somehow chained together?

Many of you have watched the Conscious.TV interview with Rupert Spira and I where we discuss Art and Consciousness. This interview occured after a previous film project we did with Rupert discussing his book, The Transparency of Things and exploring our perceptions, bodily sensations, thoughts, images and feelings to uncover the reality of our direct experience. This series investigated the belief in separation, not from an intellectual point of view, but in the here and now as an experiential exercise.

Wolter Keers was one of the first to introduce Advaita Vedanta to the Netherlands. He travelled extensively in India during the 1950's, becoming a disciple of both Ramana Maharshi and Atmananda Krishna Menon. He returned and began teaching in Brussels during the 1970's. In 1977, he founded a publication called Yoga Advaita ( 1977-1982) and, Advaita (1938 to 1985). He was published in The Mountaiun Path, the magazine of the Ramanaashram. He also translated the book entitled, I am That, written by Nisagadatta Maharaj into Dutch.

I am shocked at how many seekers I talk to summarily reject U.G.'s work even though they have almost no clear knowledge of his contribution to the "natural state."

For those of you with a sense of humor, U.G. is always reccomended; he was direct and shockingly refreshing. No candy coating here.

But, I find this book has some very special material in two areas: the strange emergence of "all of the junK' which must surface as we release our beliefs and welcome whatever arises, what U.G. calls the calamity and a brutally honest evaluation regarding the non existence of the seperate self. The clarity of this material is a breath of fresh air.

later, U.G. gets drawn into political opinions which are of little consequence; after all they are beliefs.

To assist students of non duality with an interest in quantum theory and  consciousness,  the work of Stanley Sobottka, a Professor Emeritus of Physics at The University of Virginia is one of “best of breed”. His “Course in Consciousness” covers the spectrum of physics to spirituality.

This is a dense, well researched work, recommended for those so inclined by Francis Lucille during a discussion regarding Libet and other experiments that illustrate that, in fact, we neither control nor author our thoughts. This being realized, we are prepared to conclude that, as individual personalities, we do not “make” our decisions.

This is compelling grist for thinkers investigating whether we are “the doer of our deeds.”

In the final analysis, this type of work is primarily helpful as a tool to destabilize our belief systems and, hopefully, detach us , allowing us to turn directly inward.
