The Great Texts: Deconstructing Time and Space

Great Texts Pointing to Deconstruction of Time and Space

There appears to be an infinite number of paths leading to the understanding of the Ultimate. This may be because, unlike absolute Truth, which can never change, ignorance unfolds in an infinite amount of ways, each uniquely suited to the individual "person" one believes to be.

Far be it for us to characterize one as necessarily more effective than another.

Having said this, it seems clear that, in order to truly recognize nonduality, the reality of our existence experientially, at some point, a deep and serious investigation into the key data of mentation is necessary: bodily sensation, sensory perception, feelings and thoughts.

Thus begins an investigation that starts with mentation (perceptions or arsiings) and, ultimately leads to a closer look at what we call time and space.

"Come on, Chris, you are so full of s*** with this intellectual stuff, which you think is superior to I Am. You can't let go of intellect."

To those who might share this view, I humbly respond: "'Please forgive me."

From here, it has always only been nothing but a celebration of the infinite, endless expressions of the beauty of that which is, the only true beauty that actually has ever existed.

If mere "intellectual stuff" is what appears to be occuring in these pages, let me apologize and share these words written by the Grand Master of "words" crafted to point at Non-Duality, when their shortcomings seemed so obvious.

What does Quantum Physics say about NonDuality?

What does Quantum Physics say about Non Duality?

We suffer from a fixed view of life. This view is imprisoned by subconscious beliefs parading about as facts, beliefs that are never closely inspected for veracity. These assumptions are camouflage concealing Reality from plain view.

In Western society, great credence is given to a partitioned, contained and located world of apparent solidity. It is only when we engender a deep desire to know the truth of our experience that these assumptions are challenged by the evidence that clearly appears to us.

The belief in a separate identity and, thus, a separate world, is a normally unchallenged assumption; it is the cornerstone of our Western material world archetype. It is also the source of all suffering.

Can Quantum Science help to destabilize these rigid views? The answer is yes.

Many are confused and intimidated by Vedanta. There appear to be an overwhelming array of sacred texts, Godheads and unfamiliar Sanskrit terms and no one to simply lead Western seekers through this dense forest to clarity in terms and examples familiar to them.

During the Spring of 2009, while visiting our home in California, James Swartz was inspired to compile a resource on Vedanta that would be the end all experience for Westerners seeking clarity on Vedanta. In an whirlwind fashion, James quickly completed the entire first draft of the work reducing this apparently complex teaching into a format both clear, accessible and entertaining to a western audience.

You are Being, and never separate. This is the Enlightenment, the happiness, in which all apparent things consist. It is the very Being of you.

It's a secret not because there's anyone hiding anything. It's been proclaimed by sages around the world for millennia. Rather, it's a secret because enlightenment is often misunderstood to be a matter of personal achievement, like scoring the ultimate goal. But there's no person there! There's not even a "there" or a spatial location where a person can reside. There is no individualized or separate "you" or "me"; no goal, no task and no achievement. There are no things, and no gaps separating things.

What exactly occurs in our direct experience? Does it have an independant existance from that which "sees" it or is it actually nothing but the awareness we are? This great mystery is investigated by Atmananda.

Direct experience must be the sole test of reality.

This being true, then, every presumption or conclusion should be subjected to the examination of our direct experience to validate it.

For instance, let's examine the presumption that the universe existed before our experience of it. What evidence would there be of such a universe?

“The day had come for [Hui Neng] to spread the Dharma, and he arrived at a monastery where the abbot, Master YinZong, was preaching the Parinirvana Sutra. Out in the courtyard, a flag was flapping in the wind, and two monks were arguing below. One said, "The wind is moving." The other said, "No, the flag is moving." They could not reach a conclusion. Hui Neng came forth and said, "Neither the wind nor the flag is moving. It is your minds that are moving." The whole assembly was startled.”

Greg Goode, heading the StillnessSpeaks Open Awareness Study Group, received a question regarding this post. In his answer, he gently explains this quote very methodically and clearly. It is a very important understanding. Click here to read Greg Goode explaining that "neither the wind nor flag is moving.
Paul Hedderman Video: Addiction, Recovery and Spiritual Awakening

We are hardwired for it and it's absence is the driver of all action.

But, do we ever take a look at this basic motivation to all of our human actions?

The search for happiness can not occur without unhappiness, or suffering. It is this desire to complete ourselves, to make ourselves whole and complete, this notion that we are incomplete as we are, that motivates everything we "do." We call this basic motivation: "lack."- the chronic belief that we do not have what we think we need in order to be complete.

The true nature of all of our seeking, be it for money, fame, vanity, possessions, relationship, sex, vanity, drugs, alcohol or, more subtly, enlightenment is this sense of lack..

When this desire becomes fixated and extreme, we call it addiction.

Is thought the enemy or is it simply our attachment to the single thought/belief that we are a separate, limited and bound?

Hui Neng: Sudden Awakening and The Platform Sutra

For Truth to be Truth, it must not change, it must be Absolute. If Truth could change, how could it be True?

This being the case, it should stand to reason that the end result of any spiritual path of inquiry should be the same, irrespective of the spiritual tradition followed, whether it be Chan Buddhism, Zen, Sufism, Gnostic Christian, Western Philosophy or, even, Quantum Science.

This is the ultimate test of Truth and, in fact, it is exactly what we discover.

When verifying the conclusions of any tradition, It is important take note of differences in word definitions, as assuming that various words in different traditions have the same meaning will lead to an incorrect understanding of the Truth being pointed to.

Consider this Chan Buddhist quote from The Platform Sutra of Hui Neng, noting that "mind" here might be defined mentations: sensations, thoughts, and perceptions "arising" as awareness:

"It happened that one day, when a pennant was blown about by the wind, two Bhikkhus entered into a dispute as to what it was that was in motion, the wind or the pennant. As they could not settle their difference I submitted to them that it was neither, and that what actually moved was their own mind." Hui Neng
There can not be numerous places for thought to appear because no sensation, perception or thought can partition awareness. There is only the current thought and that thought belongs to no one.

Greg Goode: A Walk thru Embodiment

Think about it. if it weren't for lack, there would be no need to locate something outside of ourselves to make us feel complete, would there? In fact, how could there be lack at all unless there were two things? Without multiplicity, how could there be this feeling of incompleteness? Negative emotions find their source here.

If this is true, is it not also true that this belief in embodiment, the "cartesian" model, the idea that what we are is contained sets the stage for suffering? The feeling of lack, of limitation is the core motivator of all seeking human behavior. if it weren't for lack, there would be no need to locate something outside of ourselves to make us feel complete. In fact, how could there be lack at all unless there were two things? Without multiplicity, how could there be this feeling of incompleteness? Negative emotions find their source here.

If this is, in fact, true, it might make sense to investigate whether the "experience of the body" is nothing more than sensations, perceptions, and beliefs, as "arisings' or thoughts within Awareness. Click here to "taste' that this awareness is not contained within the body as we explore this notion that we are embodied.

This week, we share a meditation of his, recorded at The Tampa Retreat, on Welcoming the Totality.

It shocks us how few have actually experienced Francis Lucille's exceptional book, Eternity Now. So, here it is, a full chapter of this brilliant book, considered by many the most comprehensive book written yet on advaita, Eternity Now.

Who is Alexander Smit? Another Western Spiritual teacher, this time from Amsterdam?

There are two reasons Smit caught our attention:

	1) He was a friend and student of Wolter Keers, who we have written about many times here and,

	2) He was a direct student of Nisargadatta Maharaj

Recently,we received a photocopy of a book chapter written by Walter Smit. It was quite exceptional and well worth a read, certainly remarkable enough to warrant our distribution, even though it was a photocopy. Take the time to click here to read Your Unlimited Presence by Alexander Smit.

How did it evolve into it's modern day interpretation?

Is it an effective teaching approach?

Encouraging no teacher, no path, no seeker and certainly no ignorance or knowledge, Neo Advaita takes negation to an extreme. Perhaps, to the Self, there is nothing to do, but what should someone who has not realized the Self do in the meantime? Join us as we take a short tour of the rise of neo Advaita and it's impact on the search for Truth by James Swartz, a former student of Chimayananda.
Can a Perception Perceive?

Regarding the body: Can a perception perceive?

Can a perception exist inside another perception? Can a perception act as a channel of communication of sensory perceptions?

Frequently we discuss how all sensory perceptions, bodily sensations and thoughts, including the spontaneous current thought of memory and what we call feelings ( bodily sensations with a "me" attached), are all perceived by impersonal awareness.

But, what about this perception we call the body?

Is it not merely a part of the witnessed landscape called the world?

And, if so, can a perception actually perceive?

If not, where does perception occur?

What do we mean when we say all perception occurs at "zero distance" in this "placeless place" called awareness?

The questions are discussed today in a new meditation by Rupert Spira entitled Utterly One. Click here to read Utterly One by Rupert Spira explaining the singular nature of creation, not ready made, but being born spontaneously moment to moment.

Am I only talking to myself?

Red Pill Blue Pill

Today, Francis Lucille offers an answer to two very direct questions: Are other people real and Am I talking to myself?

The first question requires us to investigate exactly what is meant by the word reality. Much of our confusion stems from the assumption that we understand words we speak the same; nothing could be further from the truth. In this case, we must carefully explore the meaning of the word "real."

The great mystery is how the mind attempts to reject, modify or co-opt the Truth in an attempt to hold onto it's belief systems. The simplicity of Francis answer here takes our breath away as it leaves no doubt whatsoever regarding this matter

Francis Lucille on The Present Moment

The Present is Never a Problem

We are hardwired for happiness.

It's absence is the driver of all action. The search for happiness can not occur without unhappiness, or suffering. It is this desire to complete ourselves, to make ourselves whole and complete, this notion that we are incomplete as we are, that motivates us to "do."

It is ultimately a rejection of the "now", the present.

Do we ever experience anything but the present moment? Is there a future beyond this thought that arises in the present moment?

The word satsang is a Sanskrit compound. 'Sat’ means truth, reality and/or ‘what is. ‘Sang’ is an abbreviated form of the word sanga and means an association or company of individuals. In the context of enlightenment, it is a group of individuals whose primary interest is enlightenment.
Once again, we are moved to share another magical dialogue with Rupert Spira, this time regarding the question, “What is the true substance of that which we experience?”

“To know ourselves as ourselves as one with whatever appears is love. To know

Rupert Spira on The Provisional Acceptance of The Witness

We have much to report regarding Rupert Spira.

Many of you have watched the Conscious.TV interview with Rupert Spira and I where we discuss Art and Consciousness. This interview occured after a previous film project we did with Rupert discussing his book, The Transparency of Things and exploring our perceptions, bodily sensations, thoughts, images and feelings to uncover the reality of our direct experience. This series investigated the belief in separation, not from an intellectual point of view, but in the here and now as an experiential exercise.

The reaction was immediate and positive. Many asked when the 2 DVD set might be available so that they could benefuit from the entire process we covered. Today, we received this 2 DVD set, The Transparency of Things, at StillnessSpeaks, and they are available while they last by clicking here.

At The Mumonkan Centre, Rupert began a free two month online study course in which the material we discussed in the2 DVD set and his book is covered. Yesterday, he responded to this question:

"You comment that Awareness or consciousness is simply observing the various arisings...as though there are two things: one called Awareness or consciousness and the other called arisings. Why would you posit such a dualistic notion in an effort to share the wisdom of non-dual experience?"

It was an interesting question which triggered a very clear answer. Click here to read Rupert Spira discussing what we call the Provisional Witness.

Perhaps, this is due to the realization that Absolute Truth is simply Truth. It never changes and is owned by no one. There is an apparent irony in the fact that deeper troubadours of truth are among the least interested in being promoted. Steven Harrison seems to be one such reluctant guru.

Aside from his three books, most of the material we have located has resulted from meetings with magazine publishers in foreign countries, publications like Mountain Path, the publication of Ramana Maharshi Ashram, which requested Francis work frequently in the late nineties. Another great publication on the topic of non duality is the online publication, Amigos. You will find their link on the resouces page. It is thru their grace that this article appears here..

Consider this quote:

U.G. Krishnamurti

U.G. Krishnamurti should never be confused with Jiddu Krishnamurti, although the two teachers did know each other. Recently, I began exploring what many consider to be U.G. Krishnamurti's seminal book, The Mystique of Enlightenment.

I am shocked at how many seekers I talk to summarily reject U.G.'s work even though they have almost no clear knowledge of his contribution to the "natural state."

For those of you with a sense of humor, U.G. is always reccomended; he was direct and shockingly refreshing. No candy coating here.

But, I find this book has some very special material in two areas: the strange emergence of "all of the junK' which must surface as we release our beliefs and welcome whatever arises, what U.G. calls the calamity and a brutally honest evaluation regarding the non existence of the seperate self. The clarity of this material is a breath of fresh air.

later, U.G. gets drawn into political opinions which are of little consequence; after all they are beliefs.

In any case, i encourage you to explore his work. Today, we share an article of his. Click here.

New Rare Wolter Keers Materials

Last Month we released some rare English translated satsang discussions with the late Wolter Keers for our newsletter subscribers. As many of you now know, Wolter was a friend of Francis Lucille and Jean Klein. Residing in the Netherlands, it is difficult to obtain Wolter Keers direct work. The works we published then, were very popular with our subscribers with many people writing us directly about the work.

For Those of you who missed it, here is a summary on Wolter Keers and his remarkable writings:

Wolter Keers was one of the first to introduce Advaita Vedanta to the Netherlands. He travelled extensively in India during the 1950's, becoming a disciple of both Ramana Maharshi and Atmananda Krishna Menon. He returned and began teaching in Brussels during the 1970's. In 1977, he founded a publication called Yoga Advaita ( 1977-1982) and, Advaita (1938 to 1985). He was published in The Mountaiun Path, the magazine of the Ramanaashram. He also translated the book entitled, I am That, written by Nisagadatta Maharaj into Dutch.

Johan van der Kooij, writing about his teacher, Jean Klein, said that Wolter was not typical:

"When I wanted to begin doing yoga, I met Wolter Keers. He absolutely didn't fit the image of a yoga teacher in my eyes. He smoked and drank whatever he felt like.."

So, Wolter Keers was colorful, to say the least. But, for many, including Johan van der Kooij, he shined:

"I was taken by his erudition and insight. Through him I came to know that there were more forms of yoga than the widely-known hatha-yoga (body yoga). I spoke with Wolter about spirituality, life questions and Self-realization once a week for two years. Wolter became a friend and teacher. My trip home began. To deepen this search Wolter introduced me to Jean Klein, an advaita-vedanta Guru who also gave instruction in Kashmir-yoga. "

Francis Lucille introduced me to the work of Wolter Keers.
William Sobottka: A Course in Consciousness

To assist students of non duality with an interest in quantum theory and consciousness, the work of Stanley Sobottka, a Professor Emeritus of Physics at The University of Virginia is one of “best of breed”. His “Course in Consciousness” covers the spectrum of physics to spirituality.

This is a dense, well researched work, recommended for those so inclined by Francis Lucille during a discussion regarding Libet and other experiments that illustrate that, in fact, we neither control nor author our thoughts. This being realized, we are prepared to conclude that, as individual personalities, we do not “make” our decisions.

This is compelling grist for thinkers investigating whether we are “the doer of our deeds.”

In the final analysis, this type of work is primarily helpful as a tool to destabilize our belief systems and, hopefully, detach us , allowing us to turn directly inward.
