What is Advaita (Advaita Vedanta)?

james swatzWhy do we hear so many Sanskrit words when discussing something as plain cut as Self Inquiry, Self Realization and the "reality of our experience"?

Just as the West has led the world in research into the nature of objective reality (the reality of the world and body), The East, and in particular, India, has led the world in subjective mapping (the realm of non objective reality).

There are many terms in Sanskrit that have no English equivalent. Take the Sanskrit term AnandaMaya Kosha, meaning literally the most subtle sheath of embodied self made of Bliss. This term refers to the experience and chasing of Bliss which can distract us while pursuing Self Realization. Although obvoius to those who are deeply involved in Self Discovery, there is simply no equivalent word in the English language

Allot of confusion can be dispelled by taking just a few moments and comparing what we mean when we use certain words in Self Inquiry. To many, there is a difference between "awareness" and "consciousness". Just as likely, many of us have a short definition of what advaita and advaita vedanta actually means.

We are lucky to have James Swartz joining us at StillnessSpeaks to unfold for us some of the mysterious sanshrit terms we hear that may be helpful in describing the Truth of our experience  Click here to read his brief descriptions of advaita vedanta and advaita and compare them with your understanding.
