Paul Brunton: Introduces the Non Duality of Ramana Maharshi

paul_bruntonWho was Paul Brunton?

"When you awaken to truth as it really is, you will have no occult vision, you will have no "astral" experience, no ravishing ecstasy. You will awaken to it in a state of utter stillness, and you will realize truth was always there within you and that reality was always there around you. Truth was not something which has grown and developed through your efforts. It is not something which has been achieved or attained laboriously adding up those efforts. it is not something which has to be made more and more perfect each year. And once your mental eyes are opened to truth they can never be closed again."

What would you have done if you were among the first Westerners to discover Ramana Maharshi?

Recently, we have begun to  explore the work of Paul Brunton, the prolific writer who many claim was the instrumental force  in introducing Ramana Maharshi to the West.

This is no small accomplishment. In many ways, Ramana Maharshi ignited the popular interest in investigating the Truth of our existence starting with the simple question, “Who am I”?

Paul Brunton’s seminal books, including The Hidden Teaching Beyond Yoga and The Wisdom of the Overself, written in the 1940’s, helped pave the way for modern non dual investigation by introducing what he called mentalism, writing in great detail on how all arises in the mind, including the ego, body and world. He was the first to clarify the limits of yoga and introduced the West to the need for Sahaj Samadhi, simply continuous and effortless trancendance, freedom, in the waking state for true realization.

After his death, Brunton’s 16 volume series entitled Notebooks continued to uncover his journey and specific aspects of the spiritual quest.

Peter Holleran, the creator of the website Mountainrunnerdoc,  has graciously offered to allow us to publish his article on Paul Brunton, which also refers to the exhaustive thesis of Anne Cahn Fung on the life and thought of Paul Brunton.
